A simple rule you can apply to choosing a gradient is that:-

Longer Ramps = Shallower Gradients = Easier to get up.
gradient 1 in 4
Too Steep for most applications.

gradient 1 in 6
Can be acceptable in some cases for assisted access in a wheelchair or for access in a powerchair or scooter

gradient 1 in 8
Often used for events etc this represents a good compromise between gradient and space. Not always suitable for manual wheelchair users.

gradient 1 in 10
Suitable for most wheelchair users, providing independent access.

gradient 1 in 12
The required maximum gradient in building regulations for installed or permanent ramps. This is the gradient often rquired by social services, local authorities etc.
1 in 4 (14º)

1 in 6 (10º)

1 in 8 (8º)

1 in 10 (6º)

1 in 12 (5º)
