A folding chair probably Victorian in origin, possibly manufactured by J & A Carter, as it is similar in many ways to a chair in the Kew Transport Museum that is labeled as being made by them. Acquired as usual in a state of disrepair and need of many hours of tender loving care. Now in a state of almost complete restoration. The most difficult part being the careful reconstruction of the seat. This chair does fold flat, presumably for transporting or storage. It has a reclining backrest. More interesting are the handles at the front and rather too long push handles at the rear, these would seem to suggest that his chair may have been built for transporting somebody up and down stairs. Most of the fittings are in brass apart from the wheels and axles. The rear wheels have limited suspension using a spring on each wheel.
